Samsung might reveal mobile camera sensors, posing a challenge to Sony
2 min readSony holds a commanding 54% share in the smartphone camera sensor market, leaving Samsung trailing at 29%. Despite being a significant player, the South Korean tech giant intends to narrow the gap by integrating on-device AI into its new camera sensors, according to Counterpoint Research.
Examining the Incorporation of AI into Samsung’s Smartphone Camera Sensors
According to Business Korea, Samsung is incorporating AI into its camera image sensor operations. Earlier this year, the South Korean company introduced its third 200MP camera sensor, featuring the Zoom Anyplace technology, powered by AI.
Samsung’s Zoom Anyplace technology facilitates simultaneous 4K video recording for both the entire frame and a magnified section of the frame.
Furthermore, the company plans to incorporate additional AI functionalities into its camera sensors. Samsung’s broader business objective is to develop sensors that can emulate human senses. The roadmap outlines the ambition to create camera sensors by 2027 with the capability to capture imperceptible elements, as detailed in the report.
President Park Yong-in of Samsung’s System LSI division has expressed the company’s dedication to leading the ‘Proactive AI’ era. This involves expertise in Generative AI, advanced algorithms, technologies, and extended-range communication solutions.
SK Hynix has revealed plans to incorporate an AI processing chip into its camera sensors, with the goal of minimizing latency, improving image quality, and reducing power consumption. The inclusion of an AI accelerator in the image sensor has facilitated the testing of features like face and object recognition.
Driven by increasing requirements from autonomous cars, IoT, robotics, and XR (Extended Reality) devices, the camera sensor market is experiencing growth in the post-pandemic period.
