Instagram’s iPad app isn’t a priority, says CEO Adam Mosseri
2 min readOriginally launched as an iPhone app under Meta’s ownership, Instagram offers distinct applications for Android and web users, yet conspicuously lacks a specialized app tailored for iPads. In contrast, there is a dedicated version of Instagram for Android tablets. However, reports suggest that Mark Zuckerberg-led social media giant has no intentions to optimize the platform specifically for iPads.
As per a 9to5Mac report, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has reiterated that developing an iPad app is not high on his list of priorities. Consequently, users hoping for an iPadOS version of the app will have to be patient.
The perspective of Instagram’s CEO.
During an Instagram Stories Q&A session, Mosseri addressed a query about the company’s intentions regarding the development of a dedicated app for iPad users. In his reply, the CEO of Instagram mentioned that there is presently no active engagement in such a project.
Although Mosseri acknowledged the potential benefits of having an iPad app in the future, he emphasized that, at the moment, other new features are of higher priority. As a result, Instagram is less inclined to prioritize a dedicated layout update specifically for iPads.
Responding to a post from YouTuber Marques Brownlee in 2022, Mosseri observed that the user base utilizing Instagram on iPads is “still not sizable enough to be a top priority.” While he indicated that a dedicated Instagram app for iPads is planned for the future, Mosseri underscored that his team is presently deeply engaged in other initiatives.
What doesn’t cause Instagram to be concerned about creating an iPad app.
Conversely, iPads boast a considerably smaller user base compared to iPhones. According to IDC data for the second quarter of 2023, Apple shipped over 42 million iPhone units, while iPad shipments amounted to only 10 million units during the same period.
It’s noteworthy that other Meta platforms, like Facebook, already offer dedicated apps for iPadOS. Instagram, as a platform, is specifically tailored for iPhones, capitalizing on their advanced camera capabilities. Nevertheless, the anticipated introduction of a dedicated iPad app aims to enhance the user experience by enabling users to view photos and videos on a larger screen.
Similar to Instagram, Threads, Meta’s recently launched microblogging platform, lacks an iPadOS version, restricting user engagement with these modern social media platforms. In August, Meta addressed this limitation by introducing a web version of Threads, compatible with both desktops and tablets.
