Samsung, Hyundai, Kia collaborate to enhance smart cars
2 min readSamsung is partnering with Hyundai Motor Group to extend its SmartThings platform, supporting connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). The collaboration aims to integrate Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including EVs, to create “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services, along with an integrated home energy management service, as stated in Samsung’s press release.
The services “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” link smart homes with in-vehicle infotainment systems, enabling remote control in both directions. Leveraging the SmartThings platform, users can execute various actions on their cars from home, such as starting the vehicle, managing smart air conditioning, adjusting windows, and monitoring charging status. Conversely, control from cars extends to home appliances like TVs, air conditioners, and EV chargers.
“This partnership facilitates Home-to-Car communication and integrated home energy management services tailored for upcoming lifestyles,” expressed Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “Linking the SmartThings platform with vehicles will substantially elevate the customer experience in both home and car environments.”
Utilizing SmartThings, users can customize their surroundings by orchestrating multiple devices, including vehicles, through routines like “good morning” and “arriving home.” For instance, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm activates, curtains automatically open, and lights and television illuminate. As users prepare to leave for work, their car will adjust to the preferred temperature. Additionally, the smartphone and TV screens will showcase information such as the EV’s remaining battery and driving range.
“This presents a chance to enhance the convenience of Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services in diverse domains,” stated Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center. “We aim to expedite our technological advancements to consistently enrich the journeys of Hyundai and Kia customers worldwide.”
